Irish Fiddler is designed to enable Mairéad Hickey to coach children one on one as they learn to play Irish tunes on the fiddle. Although Irish Fiddler was initially developed with children in mind, it is an application that anybody with an interest in Irish fiddle playing, violin, céilí or celtic music will enjoy.
At just fifteen years old Mairéad Hickey has won eight all Ireland titles for her fiddle playing and is currently the holder of the National Concert Hall’s Musicians Award 2011. Inspired by the work of organisations such as Comhaltas, Music Generation and bands like U2 who have generously invested in music education programs in Ireland, Mairéad embraced the opportunity to do her part in helping promote traditional Irish music.
Join Mairéad as she helps to develop the next generation of great Irish musicians that will carry on the tradition.

Application Features

Kerry Polka, Maggie in the Woods, Britches Full of Stitches, The Miller of Glanmire, The Blackthorn Stick and Tobins Favourite.

Each tune contains a listening lesson, tutorial, slow play through and bowing instruction and printed music

The application also includes a tutorial of how to transition from one tune to another so that the tunes can be played on a set or medley.

Pros and cons of Irish Fiddler app for iPhone and iPad

Irish Fiddler app good for

Im 54 years old now and want to learn the fiddle. My grandfather played well into his 80s and the Irish music Im learning in this app bring back many a good memory of his fiddle playing. Once I got my finger board generally marked with white-out and learnt my finger positions online at "Wikipedia Violin," this app was easy and fun to follow along.
please add the other tunes as possible as you can. thanks from japan!!

Some bad moments

It looks promising- but even though I am connected to the internet it keeps telling me that it wont download unless I connect. But I am connected. So...not useable on my iPhone 6s. Which is too bad.
First, Mairead is an amazing fiddler and an inspiration to both young musicians as well as aspiring mature folk. This App is perfect for those of us wishing to learn to play fiddle and incorporates music instruction, performance and reference material in a well designed package.
My daughter is actually learning to play the fiddle and when I showed her this app, she thought it was "class". I like the way the lessons are laid out - the girl who is teaching (she is an amazing fiddle player!) does a great job of showing you how to play the tune at speed followed by a couple of easy lessons that teach you how to play the tunes. Well done! There are some nice features that make this app a pleasure: 1) 5 second and 10 second rewind -- this is helpful when the iPad is on a music stand. My daughter doesnt have to fumble with the "scrubbing" feature to go back a few seconds to replay a part of the lesson. 2) Also, I like that on my iPad, I can show full screen of either the video or the music notation. 3) And if youve got an Apple TV, you can use a cool iOS feature to play the video on your flat screen display while leaving the music in full screen mode. Makes learning fun! Highly recommended if you or your kids are interested in Irish fiddle music...
From my perspective as a full time musician playing in several genres including Celtic tunes and songs, I have to say that this is a perfect start for any beginner but also a great resource for pros too. I didnt happen to know these particular tunes and so I let Mairead teach them to me. I also dont read notes (I play by ear) and Ill report that its not necessary - you simply learn by listening and playing along like you would in a session but with nobody judging you while youre making mistakes. Maireads attitude is so generous that you dont even feel pressured from the videos. Lets have more!
Excellent! Hoping there will be a series of apps to follow. This was exactly what I wanted. Thanks!
I was worried when the video lessons wouldnt download but I just waited for a spell and they started working. The app itself is great. I hope they make twelve more just like it :)
